Sep 2024
Hurricane Helene
Historic Storm Surge — 3.5 Feet Above Seawalls, 12 Fatalities

Hurricane Helene struck Pinellas County with catastrophic and historic storm surge — the worst in the county’s modern history. Cameras installed by USF researchers recorded over 3.5 feet of water above seawalls in multiple St. Petersburg locations. Shore Acres neighborhood was completely inundated. Clearwater Beach was buried under 6 feet of sand — South Gulfview Boulevard completely buried. Barrier islands including Treasure Island, St. Pete Beach, and Madeira Beach suffered catastrophic damage. Pinellas Fire Rescue paddled to rescue flood victims across the county. 12 residents died from Helene-related causes.

Hurricane Milton
70% Power Loss, Clearwater 6-Foot Flooding, Crane Collapse Downtown

Just 14 days after Helene, Hurricane Milton struck Pinellas County. Approximately 70% of the county lost power — hundreds of thousands of customers. In Clearwater, The Standard at 2690 Apartments was inundated by over 6 feet of water after a nearby drainage system failed — hundreds of residents had to be rescued in the most significant water rescue operation in Pinellas County history. A construction crane collapsed at 400 Central Avenue in downtown St. Petersburg. Extreme localized flooding struck between 22nd Ave and 58th St. Mayor Ken Welch said it was the worst battering in his nearly 40 years in St. Petersburg.

Total Season
$2.43 Billion Total 2024 Damage — Record for Pinellas County

The combined damage from Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton in 2024 totaled $2.43 billion in Pinellas County — the largest hurricane damage total in county history. “A person would have to spend $100,000 daily for nearly 67 consecutive years” to equal this amount, according to Pinellas County Emergency Management Director Cathie Perkins. The true cost is expected to grow as assessments and appeals continue. The county recorded 14 storm-related fatalities. Rebuilding permits became overwhelmed and the process drew criticism from residents waiting months for approvals.

Hurricane Irma
Tampa Bay Storm Surge — Pinellas Barrier Islands Evacuated

Hurricane Irma prompted mass evacuations across Pinellas County barrier islands — the first major hurricane threat to Tampa Bay in decades. While the storm tracked slightly east and reduced surge impacts in Tampa Bay, Pinellas County still experienced significant flooding, power outages, and water damage. Tarpon Springs and north Pinellas areas near the Anclote River experienced flooding. Thousands of homeowners filed water damage claims for roof damage, window failures, and interior flooding from wind-driven rain.

Pipe Bursts, AC Failures & Saltwater Corrosion — Year-Round Pinellas Risk

Beyond hurricanes, Pinellas County homeowners face elevated water damage risk from salt air corrosion accelerating pipe failures, AC unit drain clogs in the coastal humidity, and aging infrastructure in older St. Petersburg and Clearwater neighborhoods. Properties within a mile of the Gulf Coast or Tampa Bay face faster pipe and appliance deterioration. Florida’s 14-day notification rule applies to all water damage — storm or non-storm. Most pipe and AC-related water damage is covered under standard homeowners insurance.

How quickly can a team reach my Pinellas County home?
We serve all Pinellas County communities — St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Largo, Dunedin, Tarpon Springs, the barrier islands, and all other areas. Our certified crews dispatch immediately upon your call, 24/7. Call (833) 840-0239.
Does homeowners insurance cover hurricane storm surge flooding?
Standard homeowners insurance does NOT cover storm surge flooding from outside sources — that requires a separate NFIP flood insurance policy. However, internal water damage from hurricane roof failures, window leaks, pipe bursts, and AC failures IS typically covered. With Pinellas County’s $2.43B in 2024 claims, document everything immediately and notify your insurer within Florida’s 14-day deadline.
What is the $2.43 billion damage figure for Pinellas County?
The $2.43 billion is the combined residential, commercial, and infrastructure damage from Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton in 2024 — the worst hurricane season in Pinellas County history. County Emergency Management Director Cathie Perkins said the true cost is expected to grow as full damage assessments are completed.
Were Hurricane Helene and Milton both as bad as reported for Pinellas?
Yes — both were historic for Pinellas County. Helene caused record-breaking storm surge with 3.5+ feet above seawalls in St. Pete, buried Clearwater Beach in 6 feet of sand, and killed 12 Pinellas residents. Milton struck just 14 days later, caused 6+ feet of flooding in Clearwater, dropped a construction crane in downtown St. Pete, and left 70% of the county without power.
Do you serve Clearwater Beach, Treasure Island, and barrier islands?
Yes — we serve all Pinellas County barrier island communities including Clearwater Beach, St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, Madeira Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, and all other Gulf Coast communities, as well as all mainland Pinellas cities. Call (833) 840-0239 to confirm service.
